Table of contents
The first question in building a website is not which tool to use. It is what the site is supposed to do. A credential page, a search-traffic asset and a transactional storefront imply three different paths, and choosing the wrong one means every later step is a patch.
1. Three Paths, Three Cost Structures
| Path | Effort | First-year cost | Flexibility | Fits |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Site builder | Low, drag and drop | Low hundreds | Locked to platform | Validation, campaign pages |
| Template development | Medium, with an agency | Low thousands | Plugins and modules | Presentation sites |
| Full custom | High, needs cooperation | Five figures and up | Deep integration | Search and business systems |
The cost gap is not about looks. It is about changeability. Restructuring a section on a site builder often means switching templates; templates constrain you to their logic; custom work designs the structure first. Ask one question: will we need to change the page architecture significantly within a year?
2. Five Steps, None Skipped
Set the goal. Write down what the site should produce: leads, orders, or phone calls. The homepage hero follows directly from this.
Set the structure. Group sections by what users search for, not by internal departments. The common failure is a default about-us, news, products arrangement where every section behaves like a drawer.
Set the content. Name who supplies copy, images and specifications for each page. Missing content is the main cause of delay.
Build and launch. Domain, hosting, filing requirements, SSL, form notifications and analytics: six items, checked one by one.
Operate and iterate. Review traffic and conversion monthly and add pages based on data. Launch is the start, not the finish.
3. What Custom Pricing Depends On
Four variables drive price: page count, feature complexity, content production volume, and whether multiple languages are needed. Fifteen pages with standard forms and lists typically lands in the low five figures in RMB; membership, payment, multilingual or internal system integration push it higher.
Ask for the price split into design, development, content and post-launch service. Four lines tell you where the money goes and let you renew only the service portion in year two.
4. Details That Cause Rework
Mobile handling left until the end, so desktop comps look fine and phones break. Forms without delivery notifications, so leads arrive nowhere. Uncompressed images that slow the page and raise bounce. Titles and descriptions that cannot be edited per page, so every result in search looks identical.
Also settle permissions: who can edit in the backend, and whether changes can be rolled back. Write this into the handover notes so routine content updates do not require a support ticket.
5. Special Case: Game Community Sites
Building a game-focused site differs from a corporate site: content updates are frequent, media files are heavy, and traffic spikes. Prioritise bandwidth and caching, and organise content into guides and topics, or new posts disappear immediately.
For a small pilot, a site builder can validate content and user paths before migrating to a custom architecture. Estimate migration cost early, especially preserving existing URLs.
6. FAQ
Can a non-technical team do it? For presentation sites, yes. Once search optimisation and integrations are involved, an agency usually costs less than the internal time.
Should we own the domain and hosting? Yes. Keep accounts in your own name and let the agency configure them, so switching providers later stays your decision.
Is there cost after launch? Yes: content updates, speed tuning and security patches. Budget an annual maintenance line.
