How to Make a WeChat Channels Video: Six Production Steps

Making a WeChat Channels video is not the same as making one for a feed platform. A large share of reach comes from social recommendation: a friend's like pushes the clip into that friend's circle. The opening three seconds therefore has to hold a stranger while surviving the judgement of an acquaintance. The workflow needs one extra question — would someone forward this into a work group.

    1. Find the Reason to Forward

The chain is watch, agree, forward. Agreement comes from usefulness, identity or emotion. At least one has to be present, or reach stops at the first layer.

Corporate accounts usually fail by only showing products. Put the product inside a situation — why this operating condition leaks, for instance — and a colleague will forward it to another colleague.

    2. Six Steps and Their Deliverables

    StepDeliverableTest
TopicOne question plus a defined viewerMaps to a real query or doubt
ScriptSegmented talking points or shot listHook in three seconds, clear landing
ShootVertical footage, stable framingSubject centred high, subtitle space reserved
EditCut plus subtitle filePacing matches information density
CoverCover image in a consistent styleHeadline readable as a thumbnail
PublishTitle, topics, first commentInteraction within the first hour

The script is the dividing line. Shooting without one produces scattered footage that can only be stitched, and the result drags. It does not need to be word for word, but it needs three parts: the hook, three to five points, and the landing.

    3. Vertical Screen Specifics

WeChat Channels is mostly 9:16. Account for interface overlap: interaction buttons sit on the right, captions and progress at the bottom. Place the subject in the upper middle, subtitles in the lower third but clear of the very bottom.

Knowledge content runs well at 45–90 seconds; product content at 30–60. Beyond two minutes completion drops sharply unless the piece is a tight tutorial.

Subtitles are mandatory. A large share of viewing happens with sound off; no subtitles means giving that audience up. Keep subtitle lines under twelve characters, sync them to speech, and proofread any auto-transcription.

    4. Three Things in the Edit

Remove every filler sound. Watch once on mute: if the image holds for more than three seconds unchanged, add a cut or a push-in.

Align pacing with density: show specifications when you discuss specifications, walk through the process when you describe the process, and never fill with unrelated B-roll.

Keep music under the voice. In corporate content music is background, not the lead.

    5. Publishing and Review

Publish when the audience is available; industrial and B2B content performs steadily on weekday mornings and lunch breaks. Write the title as a question rather than a tease, because in-platform search matters more each year.

Review four numbers: three-second retention, completion rate, forwards, profile visits. Low forwards mean the piece lacks social currency. Low completion means pacing or length.

Search boxes also surface auto-concatenated strings such as "short video how to make of". The question behind them is unchanged: which steps cannot be skipped. Fixing the deliverables for six steps beats chasing a single viral clip.

    6. FAQ

Can we do this without an on-camera presenter? Yes. Product footage, screen recording and motion graphics all carry information, but they demand a stronger script and subtitles.

How long should one video take? Four to six hours from script to cut once the workflow is familiar; a series can compress to about three.

Is there a universal formula? A structure, not a formula: hook, single point, proof, landing.
