Custom Website or Template? Four Tests Before You Spend

A custom website typically costs three to five times a template build, and expensive is not the same as suitable. The decision does not depend on company size. It depends on four conditions: content structure complexity, how often you change things, whether internal systems must connect, and whether the budget covers maintenance.

    1. What Actually Differs

A template is a fixed structure holding your content. Delivery is fast and cost is low; the constraint is section structure and interaction. A custom build designs the information architecture first, so pages follow your business logic — at the cost of a longer cycle and deeper client involvement.

Most companies read the difference as visual quality. Visuals are the surface. The real difference is whether content can be organised the way the business needs it. A company selling both standard parts and custom fabrication needs two entirely different enquiry paths, and a template usually forces both into one form.

    2. Four Tests

    DimensionFavours templateFavours custom
Content structureSingle line, under 50 productsMultiple lines, roles, languages
IterationOne or two changes a yearNew sections monthly
    IntegrationsDisplay onlyERP, configurator, membership
Budget and timingTight, live within a monthFunded, two to three months

If two or more dimensions point to custom, the investment pays back. Choosing custom on the strength of one usually produces an expensive set of static pages whose features are never used.

    3. Where Custom Should Stop

Custom does not mean writing code from zero. A sensible approach is theme development on a mature framework: content models, permissions and SEO infrastructure come from the framework, while page structures, interactions and components follow the business. You keep flexibility without spending budget rebuilding what already exists.

The risk in a custom build is scope creep. Every page added at the prototype stage adds build hours. Control it by ranking pages into must-have, nice-to-have and later, signed off before development starts, with changes going through a formal process.

    4. Long-Term Costs to Plan For

Hosting and filing, framework and plugin upgrades, security patches, content updates. The second item is the one forgotten most often: a framework upgrade can break the theme and require a one-off adaptation project.

Put three things in the contract: full source and theme files, a database structure description, and deployment documentation. Without them, changing suppliers later becomes significantly more expensive.

    5. Acceptance List

First screen visible within two seconds on mobile. Specification tables scrollable without truncation. Language versions on separate URLs rather than a toggle. Titles and descriptions configurable per page. Form submissions with error states and server-side records. Old URLs mapped with 301 redirects.

The value of a custom site ultimately shows in maintainability. Launch is the start; over the next two or three years the marketing team will change content and add pages constantly, and a clean structure saves people.

    6. FAQ

Can custom be done under a modest budget? Yes, if you focus on core pages — home, product, cases, enquiry — and use shared modules for inner pages.

Can a template be upgraded to custom later? When the data structures diverge, the cost approaches a rebuild; a new build with link migration is usually better.

How do we know a supplier is really customising? They ask about business structure and content planning before showing page designs.
