Tourism Marketing: Build the Year Around a Seasonal Calendar

Travel demand has a clear timeline: the decision happens two to six weeks before departure, and the search peak always precedes the arrival peak. Tourism marketing that follows visitor numbers is always late, and the money lands when demand has already turned.

    1. Calculate the Lead Time

Short regional trips are decided one to two weeks out; long-haul destinations three weeks to two months. The search peak typically starts three to five weeks before the holiday itself.

The method is simple: open a search trend tool, look at last year's curve, subtract three weeks from the peak, and that is your content deadline. Content needs time to be indexed and distributed; without lead time you have already given up organic traffic.

    2. Content by Operator Type

Attractions answer "is it worth coming". Scenery, a suggested route, transport and ticket information dominate, and short video outperforms text.

Guesthouses and hotels answer "what is it like to stay". Real room footage, nearby amenities and genuine reviews beat slogans; text and video share the load.

Tour operators and local guides answer "will this be hassle-free". Itinerary, what the price includes, and how problems are handled are the deciding factors, and long-form text with Q&A fits best.

All three share one calendar, but the content types differ. Choosing a tourism marketing channel is therefore not a channel question at all — it is a question of whether the content matches the decision stage.

    3. A Twelve-Month Calendar

    PeriodThemeMain channelMedia start
Jan–FebSpring Festival, hot springsShort video, local listings4 weeks before
Mar–AprBlossom, spring outingsGuides, social3 weeks before bloom
May–JunFamily trips, graduationParenting communities, video4 weeks before
Jul–AugSummer escape, study toursSearch, long-form3 weeks before holidays
Sep–OctAutumn scenery, long haulAll channels5 weeks before
Nov–DecHot springs, new yearShort video, owned channels3 weeks before

The off-season is not idle time. It is when capture work happens: filling in page information, organising reviews, updating transport and prices. That work decides whether the peak can be caught.

    4. Channel Division

Search captures explicit demand: people already looking for a three-day itinerary or a ticket, where completeness of the page decides conversion. Short video creates demand: images and scenes that make a trip feel necessary. Social proof and reviews close it: genuine evaluations outweigh official descriptions.

The three follow the decision path, so allocate by demand intensity — search and video ahead of peak seasons, content building and owned channels in the off-season.

    5. What the Plan Should Contain

Four things: the seasonal calendar with lead times, an owner for each content type, channel and budget ratios, and acceptance metrics per milestone — impressions, saves, enquiries, redemptions.

Watch saves separately. Travel decisions are slow, and booking on the spot is unusual; saves and shares are the leading indicators of later conversion.

Search boxes also return concatenated strings such as "tourism marketing marketing", which shows the term is still being probed. The name is irrelevant; lead time and content fit are what bring visitors.

    6. FAQ

Small budget? Concentrate on one peak period and one primary channel, and go deep rather than spreading across the year.

Official content conflicts with user reviews? Follow the facts, explain and improve publicly. Honest reviews are themselves a trust asset.

Should we stop publishing in the off-season? No. It is the accumulation period; stopping resets indexing and authority before the peak.
