Export marketing is often reduced to two moves: buy ads or list on a B2B platform. Six months later the enquiry count looks acceptable but the close rate does not. The cause is rarely the channel itself — it is a mismatch between channel and product stage. Using fast-moving consumer tactics to sell a piece of equipment worth six figures will unbalance any budget.
1. Sort Enquiries Into Three Types First
Active enquiry: the buyer knows the specification and compares price and lead time. Response speed decides the outcome.
Solution enquiry: the buyer is shortlisting suppliers and cares about certification, references, capacity and after-sales support.
Nurture: the buyer has not decided whether to switch suppliers at all. Content and case studies do the work over months.
The acquisition cost of these three differs by a factor of several. If one channel is asked to deliver all three, nurture gets skipped and active enquiries get missed. Define which type you are short of before choosing channels.
2. Ramp Time and Cost by Channel
| Channel | Ramp time | Enquiry cost band | Fits | Main risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Trade show | Immediate | High | High-ticket, low-repeat equipment | Audience mismatch |
| B2B platform | 1–3 months | Medium | Standard parts, comparable specs | Price war, mixed lead quality |
| Website plus search | 3–6 months | Medium-low | Technical products needing explanation | No traffic without content |
| Social and video | 3–9 months | Low | Visually demonstrable products | Slow start, requires steady output |
| Email and referrals | Immediate | Low | Existing customer base | Aging lists, falling open rates |
The cost bands are relative only. The real number must be calculated from your own unit price and margin: how much an enquiry can cost depends on close rate and gross profit per order, not on what a competitor quoted.
3. Sequence by Company Stage
Early stage: build the website and search foundation while using a B2B platform for cash flow. Investing heavily in a platform before the foundation exists leaves your customers on someone else's shelf.
Growth stage: add trade shows and social. Shows validate positioning; social accumulates reusable material. Each supplies ammunition for the other.
Brand stage: shift weight to content and industry voice. Fewer channels, more depth.
When you evaluate an export promotion agency, ask them to explain this sequence. A team that only promises full-channel coverage usually spreads the budget across all five and finishes none.
4. Three Common Misjudgements
Treating enquiry volume as the single metric. Ten qualified enquiries can outweigh a hundred generic ones, especially for custom products.
Treating platform ranking as an asset. Position inside a platform moves with its rules; search equity on your own site belongs to you.
Ignoring response time. Overseas buyers typically contact three to five suppliers at once. A reply that arrives a day late loses most of its value.
Search boxes routinely surface concatenated strings such as "promotion marketing for" — they reflect the same underlying question: how many channels are there and what does each one do. Answering that clearly matters more than keyword density.
5. FAQ
Which channels should we try first? Start with the website plus search and one B2B platform. One builds an asset, the other protects cash flow. Review lead quality after three months before adding shows.
How should a limited budget be split? Split into foundation, validation and scale. Half to site and content, a third to test one channel, the remainder for material and optimisation.
Enquiries are plentiful but few close. Where do we start? Check response time and quote granularity first, then whether the landing page states certification, cases and lead time. The channel is rarely the cause.
Is a trade show worth it for a new exporter? Only after the website can carry the follow-up. Sending traffic to a site with no case studies wastes the one advantage a show provides: a warm introduction.
