Short Video Shot List: Five Columns That Work

The value of a shot list is not how nicely it reads, but whether five people on set know what happens next. Many teams write a lyrical paragraph instead, then discover nobody knows where the camera goes or which image matches which line. The result is improvisation, and improvisation in commercial content usually means reshooting.

    1. Why the List Comes Before the Camera

Set time is expensive. Equipment, location, on-camera talent and lighting are hard to assemble at once; every ten minutes of hesitation costs the whole crew.

A list fixes three things in advance: what to shoot, in what order, and what counts as good enough. Without those, the day becomes improvisation.

    2. Five Columns That Are Enough

    ShotLengthVisualVoice or dialogueText and props
13sProduct close-up, push up from belowNoneLarge title with product name
25sWorkshop wide, person enters frameOne sentence naming the problemKeyword strip
38sDetail of the operation, locked-off cameraExplain the methodData or spec callout
46sSplit screen comparisonExplain the differenceBefore/after labels
54sReturn to product, holdOne call to actionContact route

The visual column must be executable: height, framing, movement. "Show the product" is not a plan. Write dialogue the way people speak; any line that runs long when read aloud should be cut.

    3. How the Three Durations Differ

    LengthOpeningMiddleEnding
15sConclusion or visual impactOne proof pointOne call to action
30sRaise the problemTwo proofs and one comparisonConclusion plus action
60sSet the sceneThree beats, one message eachResolve and hold attention

15 seconds suits paid distribution, 30 suits feeds, 60 suits the site. One theme can produce all three; cutting the 60 into shorter versions is cheaper than writing three lists.

    4. Running the Shoot Day

Shoot by shot number, not by final sequence. Group everything that shares a camera position and lighting setup.

Play back each shot on the spot and check focus, clear space for subtitles, and background noise. None of these can be fixed later.

Leave margin: capture roughly 1.3 times the planned footage. The extra frames are what save an edit. A point often missed in templates is a notes column stating where each clip might be used.

Assign one person to watch the clock and the list only, so the crew does not disappear into detail and lose the overall length.

    5. FAQ

How detailed should the table be? Detailed enough that each shot can be executed independently. Five columns work for teams under five people; larger crews can add an owner column.

Do phone shoots need a list? More than ever. Phone footage tolerates less error, so fixing camera position and order in advance reduces rework.

Is a shot list the same as a storyboard? Practically yes. Storyboards lean visual, scripts lean execution, and commercial work usually merges both into one table.
