Shooting a Factory Video: An On-Site Checklist

In a factory video shoot, eighty percent of the persuasive power comes from the floor itself: whether machines look maintained, whether processes read as continuous, whether operators follow procedure. A director cannot arrange these on the day. This checklist is ordered by time; confirm each item the day before.

    1. Pick the Window Before the Angle

Two constraints: daylight and production rhythm. Daytime near windows creates high contrast and blown highlights; night shifts have stable light but fewer people.

Schedule the main shoot between nine and eleven in the morning, when light is oblique and spread evenly and the shift is fully staffed. Avoid maintenance and cleaning windows for high-heat or dusty processes.

Camera sequence follows one rule: wide first to establish space, medium to show process, close-up to prove precision. Reverse the order and the edit has no connective tissue.

The "establishing shots" line is the one commonly forgotten. Opening and closing cards need site exteriors, gates and signage; if they are not captured, the edit borrows stock.

    3. Safety and Compliance

Personal protective equipment is mandatory, including for anyone in frame. Helmets, goggles and gloves missing on screen invite questions about management discipline.

Confirm which customer logos, model numbers and process parameters may appear. A frequent cause of rework in factory shoots is discovering in post that a shot revealed a client's identity or a formula that should not be public.

For smart factory films, watch the data screens. Throughput, yield and order information should be masked or replaced with demo data in advance.

    4. Handling Sound

Machine noise defeats sync audio. Practical approach: record narration in a quiet room, keep the floor track only as ambience, and lower it in the mix.

If workers need to speak, use a lavalier close to the mouth and record during a stop. Live interviews on a running floor are rarely usable.

Keeping some machine sound in a manufacturing film adds authenticity, but keep the level below the narration.

    5. The Shot List

Site exterior and gate, reception and showroom, wide shots of main equipment, medium shots of key processes, close-ups of inspection, hand-level detail of operation, finished goods, loading, and a team or meeting scene.

Two to three takes per category. Coverage below three times the final runtime leaves no room to pace the edit.

    6. FAQ

    Will the shoot disrupt production?

Some, but controllable. Concentrate on two lines and two windows; the rest runs normally. Half a day of disruption is typical.

What if the floor is messy?

Tidying matters more than shooting. Remove unrelated materials from frame, place tools at marked positions, clean the floor. Low cost, visible improvement.

Do we need to clear the floor?

Not clear it, but rehearse the walk-through. Have participants run the route once so the take lands.

Can we shoot on an overcast day?

Yes. Diffused light suits people and equipment close-ups. Save exteriors and signage for a clear day.
