Exporters often make the same mistake: choose the platform first, then figure out content. They see a competitor with an account, open one, post for three months with no response, then switch platforms and start again. The order should be reversed — confirm where your buyers actually decide, then commit.
1. Start From the Buying Path
B2B and B2C paths differ sharply. B2B purchasing runs through search, supplier comparison, sample testing and factory audits. Social platforms support trust rather than generate entry. B2C buyers are more often introduced on social and complete the purchase on a marketplace or independent store.
A practical test: ask three closed customers how they found you. Where the answers cluster is where the budget belongs.
2. Platform-to-Market Fit
| Platform type | Buyer type | Content form | Effort |
|---|---|---|---|
| Professional networks | B2B procurement, engineers | Cases, certifications, factory footage | Medium, needs cadence |
| Video platforms | Consumer goods, equipment demos | Vertical video, unboxing, testing | High, needs throughput |
| Visual communities | Home, design, consumer | Scenario images, styling ideas | Medium-high, visual quality |
| Industry forums | Specialised equipment, parts | Technical answers, spec comparisons | Low but needs expertise |
| Messaging apps | Southeast Asia, Middle East | One-to-one quotes, follow-up | Medium, responsiveness |
A common overseas social media marketing error is covering only mass-market platforms. For industrial products, professional networks and industry forums often carry more activity than entertainment platforms.
3. Three Localisation Layers
Language: not translation but idiom. Specification tables can be translated directly; slogans cannot.
Scenario: images and footage must match local conditions. Climate, working environment and installation differ, so the same film reads differently in different markets.
Trust: local buyers weigh certifications, references and response speed. One photograph of a local installation often persuades more than ten renders.
4. Calculate Content Capacity First
A platform needs at least three posts a week to stay alive. Three platforms means nine. With one person also running domestic channels, capacity runs out.
A workable approach is one shoot, many formats: a single factory visit yields a long film, three short videos, ten scenario stills and one technical Q&A. That spreads one production run across platforms.
If capacity is genuinely limited, do one platform properly rather than five badly. The "account matrix" advice found online usually becomes a set of neglected profiles.
5. Which Metrics Matter
Process: publishing cadence, engagement rate, profile visits, inbound messages. Outcome: qualified enquiries, samples sent, sales cycle.
Do not judge by follower count. Followers and enquiries have no stable relationship, especially for new accounts.
Review quarterly. Cross-language, cross-timezone operations produce slow feedback; weekly reviews mislead.
6. FAQ
Can we run this without a foreign-language team?
Outsource translation and local proofreading, but keep topic selection and case material in-house. Fully outsourced accounts tend to drift into generalities.
Should we hire a local agency?
For the first six months in a new market, a local partner helps with channels and introductions. Write content ownership and account ownership into the contract.
How long before results?
B2B usually needs two to three quarters; B2C is faster but more competitive. The first three months mainly solve for looking credible.
Website or social first?
Run them together: the site catches, social refers. Social without a place to land loses the traffic.
