    Online Marketing: Assets Before Traffic

Online marketing is hard to answer with a channel list. Channels change every year; the logic is stable. Build assets that can be found, then bring traffic to them, and make every spend leave a trace.

    1. Sequence: Assets First, Traffic Second

Have somewhere to catch traffic before you buy it. This is the base rule and the one most often broken.

The reasoning is simple: traffic is rented; assets are owned. A website, a case library, Q&A coverage and directories keep producing enquiries once indexed. Paid media stops when spend stops. Companies that reverse the order spend two or three years and start from zero at every channel switch.

    2. Four Asset Types

    ProofCases, certifications, reviewsContinuousMedium, follows projects
    ContentArticles, video, answersContinuousMedium, needs cadence
DataKeyword list, personas, media recordsWith the businessLow, needs tidying

Data is the one usually left out. Once the keyword list and personas exist, every later content and media decision has a reference.

    3. Content Cadence

In practice, the online marketing approach that works is a cadence: two fixed slots plus one flexible. Two long articles a week, one video a month, everything else by milestone.

Fixed cadence creates expectation. Customers return to check for updates and search engines crawl more often. Publishing twenty pieces in one month and then stopping for three performs visibly worse.

    4. Three Approaches and What They Cost

All-in on paid media. Fast response, but stops when spend stops, and costs climb as creative decays.

All-in on social accounts. Looks busy, but platform rules and recommendation logic are outside your control, and the conversion path is often weak.

Website only, no promotion. Solid content with no exposure means customers cannot find you.

None of the three is wrong alone; the problem is doing only one. A workable combination is website as the floor, content as the referral, paid media as the amplifier.

    5. A Six-Month Roadmap

Months one and two: complete the website and product pages, choose three to five core keywords, assemble the first case studies.

Months three and four: establish the content cadence, two long articles weekly, plus Q&A and trade media coverage. Start tracking rankings.

Months five and six: amplify with paid media on keywords that already produce enquiries, and expand the case library. At this point, decisions about online marketing approach rest on four months of your own data rather than industry rumour.

Accepting that this takes six months to start is the precondition. A budget plan expecting results in one month usually ends with the conclusion that online marketing does not work.

    6. FAQ

With a budget of tens of thousands, how should we split it?

Website and cases first, then keyword media with what remains. Avoid spreading across many platforms.

Do we need an app or mini program?

First ask whether customers need to transact on mobile. For most B2B firms, an optimised website is enough.

Nobody can write content — what then?

Provide the raw material internally and outsource the finishing. Have the person closest to the business talk, then let a content role shape it.

How do we know it is working?

Three numbers: core keyword rankings, organic traffic, and enquiries from organic traffic. All three rising means the direction is sound.
