Short Video Structure and Editing: Pace by Section

Short video structure and editing matter far more than equipment. The same footage arranged as conclusion, evidence, action can double completion; arranged as background, process, summary it loses most viewers in three seconds.

    1. Four Sections and Their Runtime

For a sixty-second piece: three to five seconds for the conclusion, ten seconds of context, thirty seconds of evidence, ten seconds of action.

    SectionShareJobHow to test
Opening5-8%Make it clearly relevantUnderstandable with sound off
Context15%Only the necessary backgroundThree sentences or fewer
Body50-60%Evidence: process, data, comparisonA frame change every 3 seconds
Close15%One specific actionNext step is unambiguous

The common mistake is ten seconds of greeting. Self-introduction carries no value for the viewer; go straight to the point.

    2. One Sentence, One Point

Ask of every line: if this is removed, will viewers be lost? If not, cut it. Run the script through this once and most drafts lose a third.

The same applies to images. Three messages in one shot means none is remembered. To show a clean workshop, use one close-up of a reflective floor. To show new equipment, show the numbers on the control panel. Replace adjectives with images.

    3. Three Levers for Pace

Shot length: four to six seconds for narrative, one to two seconds for explanation. The contrast creates rhythm.

Sound: land musical accents on cut points; duck the music where information is dense.

Silence: half a second before a key conclusion lands harder than any sound effect. Fear of dead air leads to wall-to-wall music and no emphasis.

    4. Three Prep Moves Before Editing

Write the script and read it aloud, fixing anything that sounds awkward. List the shots and mark which must be filmed and which can come from archive. Set a timeline structure with a maximum length per section.

Do this before opening the software and rework drops sharply.

    5. Pre-Publish Check

Five items: conclusion in the first three seconds, one clear thread, no subtitle typos, an action at the end, and a cover that matches the content.

    6. FAQ

    Do we need professional software?

Phone editors handle most vertical content. Move to desktop when you need multiple tracks, grading or fine subtitle control.

How do we avoid a read-aloud feel?

Break the script into one line per segment and speak line by line instead of memorising. Three takes, keep one.

    How long should it be?

Sixty to ninety seconds for knowledge content, thirty to forty-five for product, fifteen for emotional pieces. Decide by content, not by platform limits.
