How to Shoot a Short Video: Camera, Light, Audio, Shots

The problem with most short videos is not equipment. It is that the result looks wrong: washed-out image, muffled sound, and a presenter who sounds like they are reading. Nine out of ten of these come from basic setup at the shooting stage, not from the editing software. Below, the four areas that matter.

    1. Camera: Framing and Height

Camera height decides the angle the audience sees. The common beginner mistake is leaving the phone flat on a desk and shooting upward, which widens the jaw and fills the background with ceiling.

    FramingUseCamera height

Medium (knees up)DemonstrationLevel with the chest
    WideScene settingLevel with the waist

For a talking head video, mount the phone level with your eyes and stand about an arm and a half away. Look into the lens rather than at yourself on screen. This distance balances expression and gesture without distortion.

    2. Lighting: One Key Light Is Enough

Indoor footage looks grey because only the ceiling light is on. Overhead lighting casts shadows under the brow and nose and shifts skin tone yellow.

A simple fix: find a window, stand at a 45-degree angle to it with your face turned toward the glass, and bounce light back from the other side with a white board or wall. At night, use one continuous light with a softbox placed slightly in front and above.

Never place a light directly behind the subject unless you want a silhouette. Do not mix lights with very different colour temperatures, or white balance will drift.

    3. Audio: Sound Beats Resolution

Viewers tolerate average images but not unclear audio. A phone microphone indoors picks up echo and sounds hollow from even a short distance.

    • Close shots: a lavalier mic clipped inside the collar, cable routed under clothing.
    • Fixed talking head: a desktop mic just outside the frame, close to the subject.
    • Outdoors: a foam or furry windshield. Wind noise recorded in cannot be fixed later.

Record ten seconds, listen back on headphones. If consonants and breath are clear, levels are right. If it sounds muffled, the mic is probably covered by fabric.

    4. Shot Planning: One Idea Per Video

Efficiency depends on planning before rolling. Split a sixty-second video into four to six shots, each with three notes: what is on screen, the key line, and the duration.

A workable structure: three-second hook, fifteen seconds of context, twenty seconds of development, ten seconds of close. Do not open with "hello everyone" — lead with the conclusion or a question. In the development section, cut away to supporting visuals rather than holding on the presenter.

    5. Troubleshooting Common Problems

    SymptomLikely causeFix
Washed-out imageOverhead light onlyFace a window or add a key light
Yellow skin toneMixed colour temperaturesUnify lamps, reset white balance
Shaky frameHandheld or unstable tripodUse a tripod, gimbal when walking
Hollow audioEmpty room, distant micMove the mic closer, add soft furnishing

    6. Equipment Can Wait

To start, a phone plus a lavalier is enough. Add a tripod, light and gimbal as problems appear: stability first, then light, then audio. Buying everything at once usually leaves most of it unused.

    7. FAQ

Is there a big difference between a phone and a camera?

With good light and audio, a phone meets most platform requirements. The gap shows in low light and background blur.

How do I shoot indoors with no window?

Use two continuous lights: a key at 45 degrees in front, and a rim light behind at half power.

How long should one video be?

Talking head under sixty seconds; demonstrations up to ninety. If the content does not fit, split it.

Do I need a full script?

Use bullet points. A word-for-word script sounds stiff and makes delivery mechanical.
