Table of contents
Corporate video production companies are numerous and their quotes span a wide range. A showreel alone tells you little about real capability. A workable method is to score candidates on six dimensions with the same table, then verify with a small paid pilot.
1. What a Showreel Proves and Does Not
A showreel shows taste and finish. It does not show budget, schedule or how well the team communicates. Some reels are co-productions where another crew did the work.
So ask three follow-ups: how many days the shoot took, how many revision rounds it needed, how many people the client assigned. Vague answers usually mean borrowed footage.
2. Six Evaluation Dimensions
| Dimension | What to look at | How to check | Weight |
|---|---|---|---|
| Storytelling | Can the script explain one thing clearly | Ask for a verbal outline | High |
| Crew | Director and camera in-house | Ask for names and availability | High |
| Category fit | Similar products handled | Examine case details | Medium |
| Post-production | Grading, animation, sound | Review project files or finished detail | Medium |
| Quote transparency | Line items separated | Require itemised pricing | High |
| Responsiveness | Revision rounds and response time | Put it in the contract | Medium |
Weights are yours to adjust for the two dimensions you care about most. What matters is scoring every candidate on the same table instead of deciding on impressions.
3. Running a Pitch Without Waste
Pitch on thinking, not on finished films. Ask each candidate for a one-page creative direction and shooting approach within 48 hours. It costs little and reveals how well they understood the brief.
Shortlist two or three for a detailed storyboard and budget. At this stage, pay a creative fee — a few hundred to a couple of thousand — which buys far better thinking than a free pitch.
4. Four Clauses Every Contract Needs
First, the delivery list: runtime, number of versions (horizontal and vertical), whether subtitled versions are included. Second, revision rounds: how many are included and how extras are priced.
Third, asset ownership: whether raw footage is delivered and whether the client may re-edit. Fourth, milestones: script approval, shoot day, first cut, final cut, and what happens on delay.
Without these four, disputes are near certain. Professional corporate video production companies usually offer such clauses proactively; evasiveness is a warning sign.
5. What the Client Does on Shoot Day
Send one person with authority to decide, not a chain of approvals. Confirm power, access routes, clean products and appropriate clothing in advance.
For factories or production lines, agree downtime with the production department ahead of time. On a corporate video, an hour of waiting often costs an extra shooting day.
6. Blending Animation With Live Action
Internal structures and process principles read better in animation. People, places and atmosphere carry more weight on camera. A product video team that only shoots live action tends to turn explanations into a flat walkthrough.
A sensible ratio is live action as the base with animation for the parts the camera cannot see, typically twenty to thirty percent of runtime.
7. FAQ
How long should the video be?
Three to five minutes for a company profile, one to three for a product, under sixty seconds for paid media. One shoot can yield several versions.
Should we write the script?
Supply facts and selling points; the producer supplies structure. Splitting the work reduces rework.
How do we know a quote is reasonable?
Check whether the items are complete and whether the crew matches the price. Missing items matter more than unit price.
How many videos from one shoot?
Usually one main film plus several short cuts. Multiple independent themes require additional shooting days.
