After the User Base Peaks: Rethinking Brand Accounts

Short video user base is a phrase that appears in nearly every industry report. Most public research converges on one conclusion: new user growth has slowed while time spent has stabilised. For businesses this means something concrete — free reach from platform growth is getting harder to obtain. The playbook has to change.

    1. What a Peak Means

When total users stop growing fast, platforms shift competition from acquisition to retention. That shift reaches content: recommendation favours material that holds attention rather than material that earns clicks. Completion, interaction and return visits gain weight; clickbait loses it.

The practical experience for brand accounts: a video of the same quality gets fewer views than two years ago. The content did not get worse. The denominator changed — the same audience, several times the supply.

    2. Incremental Versus Stock Era

The change in traffic dividend is essentially a change in the cost of trial and error. In the incremental era you could gamble on volume; in the stock era you need structure — fixed formats, fixed persona, fixed rhythm.

    3. Three Changes for Brand Accounts

First, split content into three types: acquisition, nurture and conversion, roughly four-three-three. An account that only acquires can have many followers and no enquiries.

Second, switch topics from "what do we want to shoot" to "what do customers ask". Pre-sale questions, after-sale problems and industry misconceptions never run dry, and they carry search intent.

Third, treat the account as an asset rather than a campaign. Stock operations means a published video keeps working through the profile, collections and pinned posts.

    4. Metrics Beyond Scale

Audience quality explains more than follower count. Three tests: do comments contain specific questions; is there a link between direct messages and actual deals; do followers' region and age match your buyers.

Then two structural metrics: is older content still producing new views, and what is the enquiry conversion rate per piece. The first shows whether assets are compounding, the second whether content matches the business.

    5. FAQ

Will the user base keep growing? Public research broadly points to slower growth. Businesses should watch activity among their own target audience rather than the total.

Is it too late to start? No, but change the goal. Treat it as an acquisition channel rather than a traffic channel and expectations become realistic.

Do we need daily posts? No. Consistency beats frequency: three a week for a year beats a month of daily posts followed by silence.

Should we buy reach? Amplify content that already performs organically, rather than using spend to rescue content nobody watched.
