Table of contents
Companies asking about timelines have usually decided to build; they want a launch date. The answer is rarely "how long development takes" but "when will the content be ready". Most slippage comes from missing materials and stuck approvals, not unfinished code. Here is the breakdown, with what can and cannot overlap.
1. Three Things Decide the Timeline
Page count, whether content exists, and the hosting and filing situation. Few pages with all-new content can take longer than many pages with existing content. Filing on domestic hosting is a hard constraint that cannot be compressed.
So before scheduling, ask three questions: how many pages need design, where are the product materials, and has the server been purchased. Those three fix the order of magnitude.
2. Stage Durations and Bottlenecks
| Stage | Typical duration | Can overlap | Main bottleneck |
|---|---|---|---|
| Requirements and structure | 3–5 days | No | Decision maker absent |
| Visual design | 7–15 days | With content | Endless revisions |
| Front and back end build | 10–20 days | With content | Scope added midway |
| Content entry and proofing | 5–10 days | Can prepare early | Materials not supplied |
| Filing | 10–20 working days | With development | Incomplete documents |
| Testing and launch | 3–5 days | No | No acceptance criteria |
Read the table sideways and only the first and last stages are strictly sequential. Design, development, content and filing can overlap — provided someone coordinates them.
3. What Runs in Parallel
Content preparation can and should start alongside design. Product photography, specifications, cases and credentials take longer to collect than expected: sourcing images, retouching, confirming what may be published.
Filing timelines depend on entity documents. Submit in the first week of the project rather than waiting for development to finish.
4. Common Causes of Slippage
Scope expanding midway: deciding to add a shop, membership, or multiple languages after work has started. Each addition extends not just build time but testing and integration.
Approval chains that are too long: a design going through three levels of confirmation, two weeks per loop.
And missing acceptance criteria: a day before launch nobody can articulate what is wrong, so everyone polishes indefinitely. Write the criteria at design sign-off: which pages, which resolutions, which interactions.
5. FAQ
Can we launch in a month? A five to eight page showcase site with ready content and hosting is feasible in a month. With commerce or multiple languages, allow two.
Can the timeline be compressed? Build time yes; content and filing no. To go faster, prepare materials earlier.
Can we launch and fill content later? Yes, but empty sections hurt first impressions. At minimum complete the primary product pages and contact details.
Is a redesign faster than a new build? Not necessarily. Migrating existing content and handling redirects is routinely underestimated.
