In bespoke website projects, most of the elapsed time goes into "this does not feel right" rather than development. Two things were never fixed at the start: how bespoke the site should be, and who makes the aesthetic decision. Settle both before kickoff and rework halves.
1. Three Tiers, Threefold Cost Difference
| Tier | Approach | Fits | Timeline |
|---|---|---|---|
| Template recolour | Swap palette and images | Tight budget, fast launch | 1–2 weeks |
| Semi-bespoke | Template frame plus custom home and sections | Most SMEs | 3–5 weeks |
| Fully bespoke | New layout and interaction design | High brand requirements | 6–12 weeks |
Many buyers say bespoke when the need is semi-bespoke. Semi-bespoke solves "does not look like a template" at half the cost. The test: is there content structure that only layout can carry — a complex configurator, a case map, a data dashboard?
2. Four Asset Groups Before Kickoff
Copy for every page including titles, body, specifications and certifications. Images — product, scene, team — at least 1,920 pixels wide. Brand assets: logo source files, colour values, font licences. References: three to five sites you like and three you dislike, with reasons.
Starting without assets means designing with placeholders, then replacing before launch and breaking the layout. A professional agency supplies an asset checklist; ask for one if not offered.
3. Four Sign-Off Points
Style: review two or three homepage visuals and lock one. Layout: confirm inner-page structure and hierarchy. Interaction: walk through forms, filters and overlays. Pre-launch: page-by-page check against the requirements list.
Each point is confirmed once, then the next begins. Skipping style sign-off and moving straight to inner pages is the leading cause of rework in fully bespoke projects.
4. Revision Policy
Two to three rounds per stage is standard. Write it down: unlimited small adjustments within a round, hourly billing beyond it. This protects the client and gives the vendor a boundary. International custom website projects treat this as default; many domestic contracts still say "until satisfied".
5. One Decision Maker
The usual deadlock is the owner, marketing and sales disagreeing while the designer revises every round. Appoint one decision maker, have others route opinions through that person. Put the rule in the project channel — it works better than post-hoc mediation.
6. Pre-Launch Checklist
| Check | Standard | Owner |
|---|---|---|
| Copy | No typos, no placeholder text | Client |
| Images | No distortion, no grey background | Vendor |
| Forms | Notifications fire, backend records visible | Vendor |
| Mobile | Layout correct on three devices | Vendor |
| Speed | Interactive within three seconds | Vendor |
7. FAQ
What does a bespoke website cost? Semi-bespoke usually 15k–40k CNY; fully bespoke from 50k, driven by design and interaction hours.
Can we supply our own design? Yes — design in Figma and hand it to development, saving design fees but accepting a fidelity assessment.
Can we edit content ourselves afterwards? Depends on whether a visual editor is included. Specify it in the contract.
