The usual mistake in foreign trade marketing is treating inquiry count as the only metric. Volume rises, few of those inquiries reach quotation or sampling, and the sales team drowns in conversations that go nowhere. A more practical approach is to grade inquiries first, then decide how much budget each channel deserves.
1. Define What a Good Inquiry Looks Like
A good inquiry is not an email asking for a price. It carries three elements: a stated product or model, a stated volume or application, and verifiable company information. With all three, sales can quote the same day. Without one, it takes several rounds just to qualify.
| Tier | Criteria | Response target |
|---|---|---|
| A | Product, volume and company all clear | Same day quote |
| B | Real need, incomplete details | Within 48 hours |
| C | Generic price list request | Automated reply and catalogue |
Grading is about allocating people, not judging customers. A-tier gets a person, C-tier gets a resource pack, and the team stops losing hours on the low-intent tail.
2. Rank Channels by Quality
| Channel | Typical inquiry tier | Time to traction | Main cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Organic search on your own site | A and B | 3–6 months | Content and build |
| B2B marketplaces | B and C | 1–2 months | Membership and ads |
| Email outreach | Mostly B | Continuous | People and tooling |
| Trade shows | Mostly A | Per calendar | Booth and travel |
| Social and short video | Mostly C | 6 months plus | Content capacity |
No channel is inherently better; the question is stage fit. Early on, marketplaces buy you the first conversations fast. Once the product line is stable, your own site carries long-tail search at a lower marginal cost, and buyers comparing suppliers trust it more than a listing.
3. What the Site Should Carry
Do not build a site that only says who you are. Cover four content types: category pages that state what you make, application pages that show working conditions, specification pages that help buyers choose a model, and certification pages that answer why they should believe you.
When those four exist, long-tail search brings B-tier inquiries from buyers who already know what they need and are deciding whom to trust. Those conversations cost far less than generic marketplace requests.
4. Three Steps to Execute
First, grade your existing customers and trace which channel each originally came from. That decides where the budget should lean. Second, go deep on one primary channel: assets, landing pages and follow-up scripts working as one system. Third, set monthly metrics: inquiry count, A-tier share, quote-to-order rate, and first-order cycle time.
Watching only inquiry count invites noise. Watching only closed deals hides where the funnel leaks. Together, the four numbers show whether the problem is channel or follow-up.
5. Budget Sequencing
Split the first year into three parts: 20 percent for testing, 50 percent for deepening the primary channel, 30 percent for content and site infrastructure. Testing may fail, but bound it in time. A channel with no A-tier inquiry after two full months should be replaced.
When evaluating an export marketing agency, check two things: whether they ask to see your historical inquiry mix, and whether they commit to a monthly metric definition. Agencies that only promise inquiry volume tend to fill the pipeline with cheap traffic.
6. FAQ
Do we need our own site to start? Not immediately. But if the goal is lowering acquisition cost over time and capturing comparison-stage search, it becomes essential infrastructure.
Many inquiries, few orders? Look at A-tier share first. Below one in five points to traffic mix; high A-tier with low closing points to quoting and sampling.
Should we build for small language markets? Validate the English site first, then add languages based on order share, rather than maintaining several thin sites at once.
