Table of contents
Industrial marketing spend often returns little, and the reason is rarely the channel. It is that the content does not match the reader. Industrial purchases involve several people: engineering checks specifications and process, procurement checks price and lead time, management checks risk and lifetime cost. One piece of marketing copy aimed at all three ends up mattering to none.
1. Three Readers, Three Concerns
| Role | Cares about | Useful content | Useless content |
|---|---|---|---|
| Engineering | Specs, process, compatibility | Selection tables, test reports, working conditions | Brand vision |
| Procurement | Price, lead time, payment terms | Price ranges, delivery commitments, sample policy | Emotional storytelling |
| Decision maker | Risk, service, lifetime cost | References, warranty terms, service coverage | Spec dumps |
Serving three readers does not mean three campaigns. One technical white paper with specifications, lead times and references lets engineering read detail, procurement read delivery, and management read proof.
2. Content Types That Cannot Be Replaced
Three formats carry weight in industrial buying: catalogues with selection tables, application case notes, and test or certification documents. They generate no emotion but they generate trust, and they are the documents forwarded inside the buyer's organisation.
Add two supporting formats: short video showing process and site, and articles that answer specific problems. Video proves you actually do the work; articles get found in search.
Selection material is the most commonly missing asset. When a buyer compares three suppliers, the one with a clear selection table advances.
3. Channels by Buying Stage
Early stage, buyers search categories and problems, so the site and content sections do the work. Mid stage, they compare and look for cases, which is where trade media, B2B platforms and case pages matter. Late stage, they verify delivery capability, and trade shows, site visits and sample testing decide the outcome.
The channel order is a budget instruction. Spend everything on early-stage exposure and mid-stage has nothing to receive the interest, so inquiries stall.
4. What Food Service Marketing Teaches
Food service marketing looks unrelated, but both categories depend on verifiable experience: tasting and repeat visits in one case, samples and trial runs in the other. The difference is cycle length. Industrial buyers take three to twelve months, so content must be published before the question arrives.
5. Measurement
Do not measure industrial marketing by inquiry count alone. Four metrics: qualified inquiries (product and volume stated), sample or trial requests, progression into proposal stage, and sales cycle length.
The first two reflect content quality, the last two reflect follow-up capability. Read together, they separate a marketing problem from a sales problem.
6. FAQ
Should industrial brands use short video? Yes, but focus on process and site rather than talking-head selling points. Buyers want to see how you work.
Should the site show prices? Show ranges or pricing logic rather than exact quotes. Ranges filter out mismatched budgets.
Are trade shows still worth it? For categories needing physical verification, yes, but prepare invitations and materials in advance or you only collect business cards.
