Once an online promotion budget is spread across six channels, no channel gets a readable sample and nobody can say what worked. The deciding factor is rarely a tactic inside one channel. It is the division of labour between channels: who makes strangers aware, who catches people already looking, and who helps them decide.
1. Divide Channels by Job Before Budget
Search channels capture existing demand. The buyer knows what they want; the contest is visibility and credibility. Feeds and short video create interest where none existed. Trade media and industry communities build professional standing with a sceptical audience. Owned channels turn one contact into several.
These roles are not interchangeable. Using feed advertising to catch precise search demand is expensive. Using search to create demand that does not exist yet means waiting for a visitor who will never arrive.
2. Three Tiers by Order Value
| Order value | Primary | Support | Content focus | Validation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Low (under a few hundred) | Feeds, short video | In-platform search | Single benefit and scenario | 2–3 weeks |
| Mid (thousands) | Search + content | Trade media, Q&A | Comparison and buying guides | 4–8 weeks |
| High (tens of thousands) | Search + website | Trade media, cases, events | Proof chain and decision chain | 3–6 months |
Low ticket values reward volume and short paths; the message must land within one screen. Mid values reward comparison; buyers open three to five pages and the fuller set of material wins. High values reward trust, with several contacts and several people involved before signature.
Industrial and durable goods usually sit in the third tier. Automotive promotion sits between the second and third: long cycles, heavy comparison, and test drives and word of mouth outweighing advertising. Media spend has to match dealer capacity, or leads arrive with nobody to receive them.
3. Writing an Executable Plan
Five sections are enough: the goal for the quarter, the buyer and the decision chain, channel roles with budget ratios, a content list with owners and volume, and the metrics with review dates.
Start with a 5:3:2 split — half to the primary channel, thirty percent to support, twenty percent to testing. Do not cut the test budget; it produces the next round's evidence. If content capacity is thin, concentrate on two channels rather than spreading thin to look comprehensive.
Layer the metrics: reach measures cost per thousand, interest measures dwell and interaction, conversion measures qualified enquiries, revenue measures closed deals. Watching only reach buys cheap irrelevant traffic. Watching only closed deals gives too few samples too late.
4. Three Ways Budget Leaks
Retargeting the same audience across channels that share one targeting pool — frequency rises, incremental reach does not. Creative that cannot keep up — three channels open, one asset set, and the same sentence follows the buyer everywhere. Landing pages mismatched to the source — a dense long page opened from short video on a phone produces high bounce for structural reasons, not content quality.
Search boxes also surface auto-concatenated strings such as "online promotion promotion". The underlying question is unchanged: which entry points get the money, and how do they divide the work.
5. Working With an Agency
When evaluating a promotion agency, check whether they ask about margin structure and the decision chain before quoting resources. A rate card that never mentions order value usually means template buying. Run a short trial with checkable numbers rather than choosing from a case deck.
6. FAQ
A small budget — how many channels? Two: one primary, one test, with at least twenty percent held for testing.
Brand and performance at the same time? With high order values and long cycles, yes. Brand lowers the cost of every later contact.
Bad results: change channel or creative first? Creative. Channels carry higher marginal cost and slower switching.
