Choosing a Bidding Ads Agency: Four Models Compared

Most companies start by comparing quotes: three proposals on the table, lowest service fee wins. But paid search has two cost lines — media spend to the platform and labour to the agency. Optimising only the second usually inflates the first.

    1. Four Cooperation Models

ModelHow it is chargedFits whomHidden cost
Fee + rebateFixed monthly fee plus a share of spendMid budgets needing ongoing supportRebate structure can encourage higher spend
Flat feeMonthly or per projectTeams with an internal operatorOptimisation frequency is hard to enforce
Per leadPriced per qualified leadShort paths, quickly verifiableLead quality definitions invite disputes
Revenue shareShare of closed dealsHigh order values, traceable funnelAttribution scope must be agreed upfront

None is inherently better; match the model to your capacity. Without an internal operator, a flat fee often turns into a monthly report with nobody touching the account. Per-lead looks effortless until the definition of a lead is contested, and the argument costs more than the savings.

    2. Three Capabilities Worth More Than a Case Deck

Account structure. Ask them to describe how they would build the account: which dimension splits campaigns, how keywords are tiered, how negatives are maintained. If they can only discuss creative, they will treat the account as an asset library.

Landing page capability. Half of all conversion loss in bidding ads happens on the landing page. Check whether they will rebuild your pages rather than sending all traffic to the home page.

Data definitions. Ask three questions: how is a conversion defined, how are invalid clicks excluded, what is the attribution window. Vague answers mean the reports will look good while revenue does not move.

    3. Designing the Trial

Do not sign an annual contract first. Run four to six weeks with a capped budget, one product or region, and a weekly review. The review should track three ratios — click-through rate, landing page conversion, cost per qualified enquiry — rather than spend pacing.

One more signal: does the agency proactively argue against bidding on certain terms. A team willing to cut keywords is judging by business logic, not by spend volume.

    4. Four Contract Clauses

Account ownership stays with the client and the account can be taken away at termination. Ownership of keywords and creative assets. A minimum service commitment, for example weekly negative keyword work and a monthly structure review. Data access, so the client can log in at any time.

The fourth is the one most often missed. Some companies discover six months in that the account sits under the agency's name, with no historical data — which makes switching expensive.

    5. Three Common Mistakes

Treating paid search as the only channel and ignoring organic search and content as long-term capture. Splitting budget across a dozen campaigns so no campaign has a usable sample. Watching cost per click instead of cost per qualified enquiry — cheap clicks that never reach a purchasing role.

Search boxes also return concatenated strings such as "PPC agency agency", which shows how unsettled the naming is in this category. Judge providers on structure, pages and definitions, not on size or naming.

    6. FAQ

Small budgets — use an agency? Below a certain spend the fee dominates. Build the basics in-house and put budget into clicks.

How do we judge lead quality? Make purchasing role and specification need required fields, and measure qualified conversation rate rather than lead count.

Can we switch mid-way? Yes, provided the account is in your name and history can be exported.
