The hardest part of a group corporate video is that every business unit wants more screen time. Manufacturing sees itself as the foundation, the new venture sees itself as the future, and every subsidiary has a request. The result is an eight-minute edit that drags and leaves viewers unable to recall a sentence. The fix happens before the shoot, in structure, not in the edit.
1. The Difficulty Is Weighting
Group films usually face three audiences: government and industry bodies, large clients, and candidates.
They care about different things but share one question: what does this group do overall, and what holds it up?
The spine should therefore be the group's positioning, not a summary of unit results. Unit segments exist to prove the spine, not to stand alone.
2. Three Structures
| Structure | Approach | Fits | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single narrative | One spine with units as evidence | Groups with related businesses | Weakly related units get compressed |
| Parallel sections | Section per unit, each self-contained | Widely diversified holdings | Can read as a list |
| Hero plus chapters | Three-minute hero film plus unit cuts | Many units, varied audiences | Higher production and coordination cost |
Groups with related businesses do better with a single narrative, because viewers can follow the synergy. Diversified holdings are safer with parallel sections, provided an overview opens the film so viewers know what they are watching.
3. Parent and Sub-Brands
One rule: the parent speaks about scope and standards, the unit speaks about products and scenarios.
The parent segment covers what kind of business this is and what standards it keeps. The unit segments cover the specific problems solved. Alternate structure — parent, unit, parent — keeps hierarchy legible.
Do not name every brand. Choose two or three representative ones and cover the rest with footage or captions. Naming more means remembering less.
4. Four Items the Plan Must State
Duration and versions: how long the hero film is, how many cuts exist, where each is used.
Weighting: seconds per unit, written into the script rather than negotiated on set.
Shooting schedule: multi-city shoots need sequencing; factories, labs and offices have different available windows.
Review mechanism: who has final approval, how many rounds, how unit opinions are consolidated. Left unclear, post-production becomes endless revision.
When choosing a production partner, check experience coordinating multiple stakeholders. Half the workload in a group film is coordination, not shooting.
5. FAQ
Does a group film have to be long? No. Three to four minutes carries the spine; longer versions can be split for specific uses.
What if a subsidiary will not cooperate? Issue a group-level notice fixing dates and a single contact; the production team talks to that contact only.
How to save budget? Protect the hero film and cut chapters from the same footage rather than shooting separately.
