Standalone Site Build Methods: Four Paths Compared

There are roughly four standalone site build methods: a hosted builder subscription, a self-hosted open-source CMS, custom development, and template outsourcing. The fork in the road is not price — it is three questions: can you move later, can you change the structure, and who maintains it day to day.

    1. The Four Paths Side by Side

    PathLaunch timeEntry costSkill requiredPortability later
Hosted builder3–7 daysAnnual fee plus add-onsLowWeak, export limits
Open-source CMS2–4 weeksServer plus labourMedium, needs opsStrong, code and data yours
Custom development6–12 weeksPriced by function hoursHighStrong, changes need a developer
Template outsourcing1–3 weeksOne-off production feeLowMedium, structural change needs the vendor

Most export businesses need either the second or the fourth: the CMS gives long-term control, the template gives a fast, predictable launch. Custom development fits businesses with workflows to integrate; using it for a brochure site is over-spending.

    2. Three Questions Before Choosing

Who maintains it? Is there anyone who can handle servers, backups and certificate renewal? Without that person, a self-hosted option will fail within six months.

Any system integration? Linking to ERP, inventory or quoting systems usually rules out template packages.

Will you change platforms in three years? If yes, do not spend heavily on decorating a setup with expensive migration.

    3. Cost Is More Than the Quote

People compare the first quote and forget four recurring items: domain and server fees, template or plugin licences, feature additions billed by the hour, and the rebuild cost at redesign.

Template setups hide cost in add-ons: a second language, a lead routing rule, and the quote can approach the original build. Open-source cost concentrates in operations labour — one compromised server can cost days.

    4. Three Pitfalls When Migrating

Product data exports with shifted fields and broken image links. URL structures are not carried over, so indexed pages vanish without 301 mapping. Domain and mailbox are registered under the vendor's name and cannot be reclaimed.

For any standalone site development, register the domain and mailbox under your own company. That single point matters more than saving a few hundred in fees. Write "site files and database belong to the client" into the contract.

    5. Pre-Launch Checklist

Verify each item: mobile first screen visible within three seconds, product pages with clear spec tables, enquiry forms actually delivering mail, language switch staying on the same page, sitemap and robots correct, and a backup entry in the admin panel. Checking these on delivery day saves a month of fixes.

    6. FAQ

What is a reasonable site build cost? A brochure site commonly sits in the low five figures in RMB; multi-language with enquiry routing runs higher. Below that, ask how additions will be priced.

Can a non-technical team self-host? Yes, if one person handles the server or operations are outsourced. Unmanaged self-hosted sites tend to fail quietly.

Builder or self-hosted for export? Use a builder to test categories and the enquiry model, then move to a standalone site once the model works.
