Table of contents
You can list dozens of online promotion channels, and it will not help you decide. Grouped into six types — search, paid feeds, content platforms, social, directories and owned audiences — the cost structures become visible. Most businesses need two or three of the six.
1. The Six Groups
| Group | Typical form | Cost structure | Fits | Speed |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Search | Organic rankings, keyword ads | Content labour or cost per click | Categories with clear demand terms | Medium, 1–3 months |
| Paid feeds | Platform placements | Paid by impression or click | Low price, fast decisions | Fast, immediate |
| Content platforms | Articles, video accounts | Mostly labour | Categories needing explanation | Slow, 3–6 months |
| Social | Groups, feeds, corporate accounts | Mostly labour | Repeat purchase, local services | Medium |
| Directories | B2B listings, industry portals | Annual fees | Wholesale, industrial parts | Medium |
| Owned | Newsletters, messaging, email | Labour | Existing customer base | Slow but stable |
The cost structure column matters more than the names. Pay-per-click stops when spending stops; content compounds and keeps delivering visits.
2. Ordering by Budget
Under ten thousand RMB: start with organic search and a content platform for free traffic, plus basic directory listings. Skip large-scale paid media.
Tens of thousands: add one paid feed channel as a test. Two to three weeks of click cost and conversion data tell you whether to scale.
Larger budgets: run search, paid and content in parallel, each with its own goal and measurement, so results stay separable.
3. Choosing by Industry
For shops, local service platforms and map listings outrank search. The question about shop promotion channels is really about visibility within three kilometres — maps, reviews, local groups.
For real estate, content platforms and owned audiences matter together. Real estate promotion channels are less about breadth than trust: walkthrough video, transaction records, policy explainers.
For industrial and wholesale, search plus directories works because purchasing starts with a keyword.
Platform promotion questions usually mean in-marketplace advertising. Marketplace and off-platform logic differ: inside a marketplace, sales volume and reviews drive organic reach; outside, content brings people to the store. Budget them separately.
4. Three Ways to Choose
First, pick channels you can receive traffic on. Without a working site or landing page, paid traffic is wasted.
Second, no more than three channel types at one time. Spread too thin and nothing shows a signal.
Third, set one metric per channel and stop any channel flat for two months, moving budget to what works.
5. FAQ
Can a few thousand RMB do anything? Yes — content plus directories. Fill the basics before buying traffic.
More channels, better results? No. Channel count and per-channel depth trade off; go deep on two first.
How do we decide to stop a channel? Watch two months of trend, not one week. If returns fall without a path to recovery, stop.
