Corporate Image Film: Three-Act Structure and Shot List

The job of a corporate image film is to let a stranger form a basic judgement about the company within a few minutes. Many films become a collection of drone shots, time-lapses and music. Viewers remember the imagery but not what the company does. The problem is rarely the shooting; it is the absence of a narrative spine at script stage.

    1. A Three-Act Structure

A clear corporate image film usually follows three acts: who we are, why we are credible, where we are going.

    ActQuestionTypical footageDuration
Who we areWhat we do, whom we serveFacility, product close-ups, team30–45s
Why credibleCapability and proofEquipment, process, inspection, certificates60–90s
Where we goDirection and commitmentR&D, customer applications, plans30–45s

The ratio is roughly two to four to two. Do not over-extend the opening: viewers decide within thirty seconds whether to keep watching. The middle carries persuasion and must be built on verifiable images.

    2. Four Decisions Before Shooting

Confirm four things at the script meeting, or the shoot will require a second visit.

    1. One-line spine. The film makes a single point, for example "this company puts delivery reliability first".
    2. Shot list. Required shots by act, with framing and conditions.
    3. On-camera subjects. Who speaks, about what, for how long. Give executives an outline, not an improvised prompt.
    4. Music direction. Restrained or uplifting changes the editing rhythm directly.

    3. Required Shot List

Gaps in a company profile video are usually discovered on the shooting day. Check this list a week ahead.

ProcessMachining, assembly, inspectionHand close-ups work well
PeopleTeam leaders, engineers, collaborationSigned consent required
OutputProduct detail, packaging, dispatchAvoid showing client logos

Shoot more than you need. Editing can remove footage; missing shots cannot be recovered.

    4. Where the Price Difference Comes From

Differences in production quotes come from four variables, not shooting days.

    VariableEffect
Shooting daysMore locations and travel raise cost
    Crew sizeDirector, camera, lighting, sound
    Post-production3D animation, grading, voice-over
    LicensingUsage period and distribution channels

Films explaining a process in 3D cost noticeably more than pure live action. On a limited budget, restrict 3D to one or two key shots and explain the rest with live footage plus captions. Ask for itemised quotes so you can see what is removable.

    5. Duration and Versions

One film for every context usually fits none. Plan three versions: a two to three minute cut for the website, a one minute loop for exhibitions, and a fifteen to thirty second vertical cut for social.

All three share footage from one shoot, so the marginal cost is low, but the plan must exist before editing. Asking for a vertical cut afterwards often produces unusable framing.

    6. FAQ

Does a corporate image film need narration?

Not always. Industrial companies benefit from narration; service companies can use location sound with captions. The key is that information never relies on music alone.

Will employees on camera look stiff?

Real staff read as more credible. Provide an outline, shoot several takes and select the natural ones.

How often should the film be updated?

Review every two to three years, and reshoot key sections when the product line, capacity or qualifications change.

Can we shoot on a phone?

Partly, on a tight budget. Watch light stability and audio quality; interview sections need an external microphone.
