Table of contents
Ask what a custom website costs and the usual answer is "it depends". That is not evasion — price is genuinely driven by variables. Break them out and you can estimate a range yourself, and see where a quote is padded. This piece covers the direction of each variable rather than fixed figures.
1. Six Variables
Page count and types, originality of design, complexity of features, who prepares content, whether third-party systems must be integrated, and the maintenance model. The first four set the base quote; the last two set the long-term cost.
To judge whether a quote is reasonable, first check whether it separates the six. A single total with no work breakdown leaves room for additions later.
2. Direction of Impact
| Variable | Lower configuration | Higher configuration | Price effect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Page count | 5–8 | 20+ | Rises linearly |
| Design originality | Template recoloured | Original visual system | Rises clearly |
| Feature complexity | Showcase plus form | Accounts, payments, integrations | Rises in steps |
| Content preparation | Client supplies | Copywriting and photography included | Rises by volume |
| Integrations | None | ERP or CRM connection | Priced per interface |
| Maintenance | One-off delivery | Annual support | Becomes a yearly fee |
Design fees differ mainly in originality. A template recoloured launches fast but looks generic; an original system fits the brand but every page is designed separately.
3. Estimating Features
Layer features by whether data flows. Pure presentation holds no data and costs least. Forms and lists involve storage and cost more. Accounts, orders and payments involve permissions and states, costing significantly more. Integration with external systems involves protocols and error handling, with the widest variance.
For each module ask: who uses it, where is the data stored, what happens on failure. Modules that cannot answer all three usually get revised repeatedly and become the real source of overrun.
4. Where to Cut
You can cut page count by merging secondary content, use shared components to reduce repeated design, and launch in phases with core pages first.
Do not cut acceptance criteria, testing, asset licensing or backups. Money saved there tends to come back at a higher price. If a quote lists these as "included free", ask what exactly is covered.
5. FAQ
What is a reasonable figure? There is no single number. Take the median of several local quotes for a similar configuration, then compare work breakdowns rather than totals.
How is a template site different? Structural freedom and future extensibility. Templates start fast and constrain unusual business logic.
Can we build in phases? Yes. Ensure core information is complete at first launch — empty sections undermine trust.
How is maintenance priced? Usually annually, covering security updates and incident handling. Confirm response times and exclusions.
