TV commercial production differs from a general corporate film in one essential way: it exists to be placed. There are duration limits, platform review and iteration against data. Many films are complete and well made, yet underperform on placement, because the structure was not designed for media from the start.
1. Three Differences From an Image Film
| Dimension | Image film | Commercial |
|---|---|---|
| Duration | Two to five minutes | Mostly 15 or 30 seconds |
| Structure | Complete narrative | First three seconds must land |
| Iteration | Replaced every two to three years | Adjusted against placement data |
An image film can develop slowly in the middle. A commercial cannot. If viewers swipe away at second three, the rest does not exist. That means writing the script backwards: conclusion first, then the support.
2. One Shoot, Three Versions
Efficiency depends on designing shots for multiple cuts.
- 15 seconds. One selling point, one image, one conclusion. For feeds and opening screens.
- 30 seconds. Selling point plus one piece of evidence, such as test data or a use case.
- Full version. One to three minutes for the website and exhibition loops.
All three share footage, but shoot enough close-ups and cutaways. Filming only for a 30-second cut leaves the full version thin. Put these shots in the storyboard rather than solving it in the edit.
3. Designing the First Three Seconds
Three structures tend to perform reliably:
- Problem opening. Show the specific friction in a real use case so viewers recognise themselves.
- Result opening. Show the outcome, then rewind to the process.
- Contrarian opening. State a judgement opposite to common practice and earn a few more seconds.
All three need a clear subject on screen. Text-only openings are hard to read on mobile and usually underperform live action.
4. Advertising Compliance Self-Check
Placement material goes through platform review, and wording covered by advertising law will be rejected. Check the following before submission.
| Check | Common issue | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Evaluative wording | Using unverifiable superlatives | Replace with verifiable facts |
| Result promises | Promising specific gains or timelines | State conditions instead |
| Data claims | Ratios or rankings without a source | Cite source and methodology |
| Comparisons | Directly disparaging similar products | Describe only your own differences |
| Certification marks | Misuse of logos | Confirm scope and validity |
Most rejections fall into these categories. Avoiding them at script stage costs far less than fixing the final cut.
5. Planning Iterations
Going live is not the end. Iterate in small steps against the data: change the first three seconds, then the closing call to action, and only then consider reshooting the body. In most cases the first two changes produce more improvement than a new shoot.
If several rounds produce no movement, the problem is likely the selling point rather than the film. Return to the product and audience analysis instead of shooting more footage.
6. FAQ
How long does production take?
Four to six weeks from script to final cut. Allow an extra month when multiple versions and review rounds are involved.
Do we need a professional crew?
Placement material needs stable image quality and clear information, so professional shooting is advisable when product detail matters. Everyday internal material can be shot in-house.
Can 15 seconds carry a selling point?
Yes, but only one. Packing several into 15 seconds means none is remembered.
What if the finished film fails platform review?
Fix wording through editing where possible; on-screen content may need a reshoot. Run a compliance pre-check at script stage.
