Short video shooting pricing is rarely a single unit price. It is a combination of variables: length, number of shots, cast, location and post-production. The same sixty-second clip can differ several times in price, and the difference is not expensive versus cheap — it is whether the quotation itemises every component.
1. Define What "One Video" Means
In the industry, "one video" may mean one finished cut from one shoot, or multiple pieces of footage from a single session. Before signing, confirm four things: how many deliverables, how long each, how many horizontal and vertical versions, and whether raw footage is included.
If these four are missing from the contract, disputes are almost guaranteed. Many projects reach halfway before both sides discover they understood "one video" differently.
2. The Five Cost Components
| Component | Includes | Priced by | Often missed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Planning | Script, storyboard, scene design | Project | Number of revisions |
| Shooting | Director, camera, lighting, crew | Day or person-day | Overtime |
| Location and props | Studio, real location, set build | Day | Set removal and restoration |
| Post-production | Edit, grading, subtitles, music licence | Minute | Second round of changes |
| Voice and animation | Voice-over, 2D animation, 3D rendering | Clip or second | Revision rounds |
Outside these five: travel, talent likeness rights, rush fees. Asking the vendor to price each item separately is the fastest way to judge whether a quote is solid.
3. Where the Price Differences Come From
Three places: equipment and crew configuration, shooting days, and post-production precision. Cinema cameras and phones produce different image quality and different prices. Compressing a one-day job into half a day means either more money or fewer shots.
A hidden variable is delivery standard. Delivering only the finished cut versus delivering layered project files and an editable asset pack is more than double the work. Clarify the usage first: a clip only for paid feeds is not the same as a film looping on a trade show screen.
4. Three Steps for Negotiation
First, cut scope rather than the total price. Remove components you do not need — no 3D animation, no paid talent, no custom score — and the price drops without hurting the core message.
Second, discuss tiers. Shooting three videos in one session costs less per video because planning and location costs are shared. Companies with a long content calendar can package by quarter and lock a reasonable unit price.
Third, keep acceptance clauses. Write down revision rounds, delivery formats and asset ownership. These three lines in a contract are worth more than any verbal promise.
5. Details People Skip When Comparing Quotes
Do not compare only totals. Ask whether the crew is in-house or assembled ad hoc; ad hoc crews are more likely to arrive incomplete. Ask whether post-production is done by the same team or outsourced; more handoffs mean more communication cost transferred to you.
Also look at the completeness of the sample. A thirty-second showreel tells you little about whether the team can carry a three-minute narrative. Ask for one complete film.
6. FAQ
How long does delivery usually take?
Seven to fifteen working days from script approval for a standard project. 3D rendering or complex locations need longer.
Should the client write the script?
The client provides business facts and selling points; the producer provides structure. Splitting it this way reduces rework.
Does the quote include media buying?
Usually not. Production and media are separate budgets and should be costed separately.
Can we shoot without editing?
Yes, but agree on formats and file naming. Footage without an editing plan often goes unused.
